About the event

Following on from the landmark project 12:40 which took place in 2018, the National Opera Studio is delighted to present 12:42, which features twelve brand new commissioned opera arias from some of the most exciting composers and librettists working today.

Each of the arias has been composed especially for the National Opera Studio's Young Artist singers, who, along with their répétiteur, have been involved in the creative process since the outset.  The arias are designed to demonstrate the individuality of each singer's vocal talents, and will be used in their audition repertoire for years to come.

Due to the COVID-19 lockdown, the project has taken on a new life, and will now consist of two films – a compilation of the arias and a "making-of" documentary, which explores the experiences of the Young Artists and Creative Teams in realising this project amid the global pandemic.  The films will be made available online, and as soon as it is safe and permitted to do so, we intend to hold an exclusive premiere of the arias (featuring both live and filmed performances) in the National Opera Studio's Blackburn Hall that will also be live-streamed to our audiences around the world.  Further information about these will be announced as soon as possible.

The Studio is delighted to be working with Second Movement again on this exciting project, and we are incredibly grateful for the continued generosity of the Nicholas John Trust, which has supported the project from its inception and through its digital transformation.
